A recent survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health brings some good news to the diabetes epidemic.

As recently reported in The New York Times, the survey found that death rates of those with diabetes have dropped sharply in the recent years. A comparison between 1997-1998 and 2006, showed a 40% decline in deaths by Cardiovascular Disease in diabetic adults. To further the good news, a 23% decline was seen with all-cause mortality rates.

Though people with diabetes are living longer, Sharon Saydah, a senior researcher at the C.D.C and an author of the study, stated, “But people with diabetes are at risk for a number of complications — cardiovascular disease, lower leg amputations, kidney disease, eye problems, dementia and other kinds of disability. Preventing all of these complications means that we will have greater health care expenses for people living with diabetes.”

So while recent news is positive, healthy choices still need to continually be made. To that end, check out these tips for living with diabetes.

Picture this: you&rsquore enjoying a day of hiking with your family. The sun is shining, the view is beautiful, and things couldn&rsquot be better.

Then one of your family members collapses and doesn&rsquot get up.

It sounds like a nightmare scenario&mdashbut it happens on a regular basis. Some of the causes of sudden, unexpected death are rare, but others are quite common. Stroke kills approximately 140,000 people per year in the United States, for example, while heart disease kills more than 600,000.

Here&rsquos an overview of some of the causes of sudden, unexpected death.
